St Ronan’s Wells Support Group Awarded £13,680 Architectural Heritage Fund Grant

The St Ronan’s Wells Support Group in Innerleithen, Scottish Borders has secured £13,680 from the Architectural Heritage Fund (AHF) to explore the future of the historic St Ronan’s Wells building.

Nestled in woodland above Innerleithen, St Ronan’s Wells is a Victorian spa dating back to 1826, with a long and significant heritage and beautiful community gardens. Owned by Scottish Borders Council, the building is due to close on 31 March following a recent review.

The Support Group, formed in October by twelve local residents is working towards taking the Wells and its gardens into community ownership and securing its future as a valued local asset.

The AHF Project Viability Grant will fund essential work including architectural plans, professional surveys and development of a detailed business plan. This will allow the group to assess the long-term sustainability of the building and submit a formal asset transfer request by the end of April.

Chairperson Emeritus Professor Chris Gilmore said:

We are very grateful to the Architectural Heritage Fund. This funding is a significant step forward for our group and for the wider community. It gives us the professional support we need to carefully assess how St Ronan’s Wells can be preserved and revitalised for future generations.”

The group is encouraging residents and supporters to follow progress and get involved.”
